Retreats

We create meditation retreats because it’s such a powerful experience to completely set aside the doings of our day-to-day lives and sink deeply into the practices of silence, simplicity and inquiry. Individually and in community, we let the stillness take root in us and flourish as an exploration of the Dharma with teachers and our companions. An intimacy grows; people and things appear vividly as themselves, and this bright intimacy accompanies us as we make our way back into our lives.

Any time we practice meditation or study together in community we create this field of encouragement, a sacred space for the magic of awakening. Retreats enlarge and intensify it. By giving up some comforts and habits for a period of time, we enact our intention to go willingly beyond the confines of the known. This is true whether we join in for an afternoon or evening or for a week.

For information on upcoming retreats, please consult our Community Life blog.

Month-by-Month Calendar

Weekly Meditation Schedule
We meet at Shove Chapel, 1010 North Nevada Avenue on the campus of Colorado College. Click here to see a map. Note: We offer incense on Wednesday mornings only.

Monday Evenings: 5:30 p.m.
Shove Chapel, downstairs: Continuing discussions with Sarah Bender, Andrew Palmer, or William Jeavons. This is an ongoing opportunity to explore the territory of practice, a varied landscape with ups and downs, detours, bright spots, foggy areas, periods of struggle, and periods of ease. Discussing such practice matters with others who are sharing the journey is beneficial for all who take part, so bring what is most alive for you at any given moment, along with your questions and curiosity.

First Monday of the month: 25-minute period of meditation, Sutra Service, second 25-minute period of meditation.
Second Monday: Meditation, recite Precepts, Community Night.

It is best to wear
comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without patterns and designs, but if you come from work and cannot change clothes, it’s not a problem.
The group gathers at Shove Chapel beginning at about 6:00 p.m. to set up the altar, cushions and chairs.
The evening begins at 6:10 p.m.
There is
no fee for participation, but donations are appreciated.
See the list of Monday schedules above for what to expect each evening.
Each 25-minute meditation period is followed by five minutes of walking meditation.
At the end of the last period of meditation, the Four Boundless Vows are chanted and there is time for sharing and announcements.

Note: On the occasional Monday evening when we are not able to meditate at Shove Chapel due to a college event, we will move meetings to nearby establishments and hold Dharma discussions there. Join our mailing list to receive the latest updates, or check the Community Life blog for current information. When a sitting has been canceled, we usually gather at Wooglin’s Deli, located just south of Shove Chapel, near the southeast corner of Tejon and Cache La Poudre.
