Berkeley Zen Center is the Soto Zen Center where Clay practiced for 14 hers before moving back to Colorado Springs and joining our sangha in 2004.

He has continued to be a student of Mel Weitsman, the Abbot of Berkeley Zen Center, while he has also been an active Springs Mountain Sangha member and taken a number of leadership roles, including at present chairing our retreat planning team. sitting on our finance team, leading meditations and book studies.
Mel Weitsman has now invited Clay to be a lay teacher in his Soto lineage, in which all teachers have been priests until recently.  This new role is one Mel instituted about eight years ago as a recognition of lay people’s dedication to practice over many years and their value to their community.    Apparently there is no equivalent of this position in Japan; nor is there one in our own Open Source tradition.  Clay joins a group of about a dozen other lay teachers with Berkeley Zen Center.
Berkeley Zen Center is kindly allowing us to attend the ceremony via Skype.  All are welcome.

We ask that you arrive by 6:15 AM (yes, in the morning!) to be settled in time for the ceremony.
