SMS Action

A deep bow to Percy Pellerin who – committed to the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; as well as to MLK Day – single handedly made these beautiful signs.  They were carried by participants of the March and brought to more than one front lawn with SMS on the back of the signs.  Percy also served on the MLK steering committee on behalf of SMS Action.  Boundless gratitude to you Percy!  Also present: Jeff Wagner (with banner), Steve Milligan (interviewed on Fox News), Liz Cramer and Sarah from her sick bed.

Ongoing

5:15 Dharma Downstairs: before Monday night meditation, at Shove Chapel.

Every Monday evening, in the Sacred Grounds downstairs room from  5:15 to 6:00,  some of us meet for informal Dharma conversation, led by Sarah Bender and sangha members.

Anyone is welcome to join in on any Monday, and no registration, previous study or experience with our community is required.  Our discussions bring each topic to meet exactly what is going on for us in our lives, in our world.

Place:  Shove Chapel downstairs from the north entrance.

Lecture: Shaun King, “Beyond Dialogue, Tools for Reclaiming Truth” – Today, in greater numbers, people are talking about real empowerment and liberation for historically disadvantaged groups. When it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement, they’re talking specifically about human dignity for African Americans. And for this movement, journalist, humanitarian, and activist Shaun King, a columnist for The Intercept and the writer-in-residence at Harvard Law School’s Fair Punishment Project, is amongst the most compelling voices: a humane and passionate advocate for justice and families, and an extremely visible fundraiser for victims of brutality and discrimination. And a retreat from our sister Desert Rain Sangha

We and everything we perceive
are interwoven and not interwoven,
and this interweaving continues on and on,
while each thing stands in its own place.

– Shitou Xiqian, Taking Part in the Gathering

Dear Friends of Desert Rain Zen,

Here’s a reminder about our March 5-10, 2019 residential retreat in the beautiful Tucson spring desert. Registration is due February 1. What an opportunity to gather and sit together!

Our venue, the Redemptorist Renewal Center, sits in desert wilderness. Because of its history, the center houses an actual Zendo with a Zen garden just outside. Our walking meditation is sometimes around the garden, and long walks take us to intimacy with the land. The top picture on the attached brochure is the view from the Zendo picture window behind the altar.

Our rooms, all singles with their own bathrooms, are near both the Zendo and the dining hall. The retreat center prepares tasty vegetarian meals and provides us a private dining room.

The retreat brochure with registration form is attached and is available at http://www.desertrainzen.org/. Please let us know if you have any questions, and remember to register by February 1st.   We are preparing for you!

Warmly,

Jen Sellers, Tenney Nathanson, and Desert Rain Zen
