If a man, going down into a river, swollen and swiftly flowing, is carried away by the current, how can he help others across?….Buddha

Autumn SparrowTwo Public Talks by Sarah Bender, Sensei
Sarah Bender will present two public talks at the Penrose Public Library, in the Penrose Carnegie Reading Room on October 23, 2013 and November 6th. The talks include:

Touching the Heart of Is October 23. Buddhism invites us to enter a place of deep inquiry (sometimes called “not knowing”)—which we find naturally when we take up a practice of stillness and silence, learning the arts of noticing what is and focusing the mind deeply within a field created by generosity of the heart.  These are our foundational practices. Sarah Bender will talk about how to take them up and why, and how to sustain them.

Releasing Impediments and Freeing Creativity of Being November 6.  As we become more and more familiar with the actual territory of our real experience, we notice the things we carry: the beliefs, opinions and habits of mind and body which so often keep us distracted and unavailable to the inconceivable and yet ever-present miracle of the present.  Buddhism offers thousands of years of experience in letting go of this extra, unhelpful baggage.

As we release more and more stuff, we become more and more available to the experience of wonder which seems inexpressible, and sometimes hard to carry back into the marketplace of our ordinary lives. Buddhism offers ways to develop more and more ease of expression–both verbal and in action—of the gratitude that rises from our experience of what truly is.

About Dana

We depend on the generosity of our members to support the work of our sangha. Donations are gratefully received in the Dana bowl in the alcove of the meditation hall in Shove Chapel. Also, everyone is invited to contribute flowers for the altar and cookies for Community Nights.

Generosity brings happiness at every stage of its expression. We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous. We experience joy in the actual act of giving something. And we experience joy in remembering the fact that we have given.
